I know that you can install a game or some other type of program on an external drive, but would you still be able to play/run the program if you reinstall Windows? I'm thinking that if you reinstall Windows, the keys in the registry might be corrupted.
What about bringing the external hd to a friend's house to run your program/game on his computer?
40gb hd for C:\ (Windows)
100gb hd for X:\ (the external hd, where i'd like to install everything) |

You'll be missing all of your registry entries if you re-install windows, not to mention, you'll probably want any libraries, especially if they're shared to be on your main harddrive. I would just keep data on your external harddrive. Treat it like a big USB key.

I see. So I can keep all my documents, movies, mp3's, etc on my external hard drive, but it wouldn't work if I installed programs/games on it. Thanks

You could install a program on it but you'd have to make sure it kept the same drive letter every time you re-attached it, and if you re-installed windows or moved to another computer, you'd probably lose all of your settings, etc.. You wouldn't have any of the registry information on the external harddrive, so yeah, it's better to just keep data/mp3s/movies, etc... on them.

I know this may be slightly off topic, but I had the funniest experience while re-loading my Media Center last week. I had an external USB 160GB Drive attached (Drivers, backups etc) and the Windows Setup program actually found it, and I found an option to boot to it if I installed Windows on it. I thought it was hilarious. I haven't used external USB drives for very long, so this may be old hat to some of you guys, but funny anyway.
